Rowan Williams' aide slates ordinariate

Richardson said the former Archbishop, Dr Rowan Williams, and Pope Emeritus Benedict had had a good relationship but could talk "frankly" on points of contention.

He told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's "Religion and Ethics" radio programme on 24 April that the Catholic hierarchy of England and Wales "wasn't I think particularly thrilled with the look of [the ordinariate] either," because it would place married clergy alongside Catholic clergy who weren't allowed to marry.

The Archbishop of Canterbury's former representative to the Holy See, Canon David Richardson, described the manner and timing of the Vatican's establishment of an Ordinariate for disaffected Anglicans four years ago as "offensive".

Australian-born Canon Richardson, outgoing Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome, added that he did not expect Pope Francis to promote the provision as much as Benedict XVI had done.
